The day between when I dropped off the cats at the vet’s for boarding and when I left myself was a strange one. Cats don’t make a lot of noise – well Gus snores sometimes – but I could tell that they weren’t there. It made the house a bit alien to me.
It was alien for the cats when they first arrived back. All of them spent the morning poking into all the corners of every room making sure things were in proper shape.
After that was out of their system they settled down into little hideouts as far away from the others as possible. After a bit, they would switch to another cubbyhole but still made sure they were well separated from each other.
I’m not sure if the idea was to occupy the whole house or to get maximum distance from the others.
There wasn’t any friction between the cats aside from one spat between Julie and Gus when Gus got too close when both were patrolling the corners of the room. Gus retreated behind the TV for a minute or so but soon came out.
The boarding room is part of the storefront of the Vets. I had the idea of peeking in the day before but decided not to get their hopes up. This is a picture of the duplex unit that Gus and Julie were in. Sure, it’s a poor picture but Gus is in the back and Julie is in the bed. When I set up the picture he had is head sticking through the porthole to the other side of their space. I asked for the low unit for them so Gus could get in and out easier during the ‘play time’ when they let them out to roam the boarding room.
I thought that the two of them would keep each other company well.
Calla had her own unit, but she bossed the local staff enough that they had to give her a cardboard box cubby to sleep in. I had to ask them where she was, since she wasn’t visible from the front.
This is her on top of the box, after I pulled her out to hold for a minute.
Gus seems back to normal.
Calla seems very talky right now. I think most of it is when she finds something not to her liking in the house. The most recent was a bad job setting up one of the water fountains upstairs and it wasn’t pumping water around. I just fixed that and maybe now she will settle down.
…nope. I’m not sure what the issue is now. The Santa Ana winds tore off the screen from a window at the top of the steps and some leaves blew in that I haven’t cleaned up. She was standing around that spot and meowing now. Another time she was quiet when I sat her next to me on a chair.
I forgot to close the garage door when bringing in the garbage cans and Julie took off through it for his usual evening wander. He’s back to normal.
