Starting out…

Unless future posts come easier than this one, this will be one of the thousands of short blogs in the world.

I’m an engineer in Southern California with three cats.  Given the nature of the internet, the cats are far more interesting than I am, even to myself.

This is the eldest of my cats, Gus.

Well, Gus is actually a nickname. His full name Gustavus Adolphus Vasa, the warrior king of Sweden who fought in the Thirty Years War in defense of the Protestants.  His tux colors and plume tail reminded me of the ruffs and feathers fashionable at the time.

I’ve always thought it was important to give your cats an impressive name.  It lets them hold their head high when mixing with the other cats or going to the vet. This can’t be done if you are a 12 pound tomcat with a name like “Mr Snufflekins”.

Gus was born in 1997. I suppose he just turned 14 either last month or this month. He’s a shelter cat, adopted from the county shelter.

Hello Gus and engineer dad! Its funny I never found this blog before. I started mine only a few months after you did yours. So we are both about the same age in this respect. As a fan of history, especialy the obscure kind, I really liked the explanation of Gus’s name. He is truly a regal kitty.

hey, Oldcat, I’ve been wondering since your blogiversary, what prompted you to start this blog in the first place? You don’t have to tell! But my curiosity is piqued!

Like the blog itself, which isn’t about anything big, there was no one big reason to start one. I was dissatisfied at the amount of pictures I was taking, and other places on the web I was spending time at were getting annoying with controversy over nothing. I had always kind of had an interest in blog software but never did anything about it.

So I decided to stake out my own little corner of the interwebs.
