Stretchy Kitty

Gus was working the kinks out of his old bones yesterday when I got this picture. He started moving as soon as he knew I was watching him. It isn’t as energetic as the squirming that Julie does or the wheelie rubs Calpurnia does in similar situations but it is nice all the same.

I broke down and bought a clipper the other day because he is starting to get some big old mats in back.  I’m sure it will be quite an interesting time for us both when I get around to cutting it back. Maybe doing a little at a time will not be so bad.

Julius was outside and a new digging near the pool fence caught his attention. I think it was just a hole make by the digging tool, but he seemed to think it was a burrow. It was kind of funny watching him peek at it and cautiously examine it from all sides. He has apparently done this before.

It wasn’t really very warm the other day, but Calla did her flat cat impression anyway.  I like that even when she streeeetches out her back feet, they don’t end up far away.

Regarding mats—If the cat is not a savage, I have had luck with this method. i pinch the base of the mat and snip away at the hairs above my fingers. This way you cannot cut the cat’s skin. Once the top of the mat has been snipped, I can usually pull the hairs apart with my fingers. I do a bit at a time not to aggravate the cat too much.

Gus is a nervous fellow, so he is sedated at the vets to get shaved. He’s old enough and his hair is long enough to make the scissor method trouble for us both. The good thing of having clippers is i can do a little at a time if it doesn’t go well.

Calla is pretty good about it – if I can catch her and start brushing, she stands there happily enough. She’s not a fan of the tummy brushing so I save it for last.
