Stylin’ Calpurnia

And here she is for real in her short hairdo.  The idea was just to remove almost all of the bulk of the long hair.  Since she’s not a show-cat,  there’s no reason to try to do more than just cut it off.   The lumps and bumps smooth themselves out as it grows.

This angle shows the texture of the cut sides a little better.  It really resembles wool until it relaxes a little bit.  Walking around she looks like she is wearing thermal pajamas.  It’s pretty cute.

She did come out lighter, but not as I expected.  The back leg is a lot lighter, as the hair from the dark spot where her ‘knee’ is when sitting down overlay the leg fur.  Her side is quite a bit lighter, but the from seems darker since the white shirt front and stomach hair isn’t covering the dark pointed hair on the front legs anymore.  She looks a lot lighter from above and a whole lot smaller.  She no longer looks nearly spherical!

And the best thing of all – now she can get at herself without the hair on her front gagging her so much.

The other cats took some alarm from the carrier.  Gus was still hiding under the bed when I brought her home a couple of hours later.  Julie was out and about, but he still doesn’t quite know what to make of her.  He’s hissing at her from time to time and trying to sniff at her.

She didn’t like that too much – she never really does, and she’s a bit extra touchy herself still.

Her fur looks a bit like astrakhan, and very thick! She’s obviously relieved to be able to clean herself properly. Still so cute!

  2. Oh oh OH! Oh my head is going to explode from the cute! she looks so fuzzy and koala furry! I just want to snatch her up and snuggle her!

She looks extremely comfortable in her new doo. Totally agree with Andrea, such a fuzz-bear she is.

  5. Just goes to show a girl can have short hair and still look regally gorgeous 🙂

I love that woolly look! Makes her cubby bod look even cubbier. I bet she’s happy, too.

I am fascinated, and taking notes.
I now have, not one, but TWO fuzzy guys, and have only had short-haired kitties before.
Nice to know this is an option.

In her first cut parts of her were shaved to the skin to get rid of mats, And Gus has had the full Lion Cut shave a couple of times himself. This cut is more to give us a little break from heavy maintenance.

In neither case were the cats bothered with the haircut aside from getting it done. They don’t seem to mind looking a little odd after a trim.

  8. She looks adorable. We know how it feels to “gag” on the fur when we try to clean our chest.

P.S. We’ve asked Jan and Marg to consider removing the “word verification” from the auction. We’re so sorry you had problems leaving a bid. Thank you for your consideration.

  9. Awww. She looks a little sullen, but she’s still adorable. I can’t imagine having a coat that thick – it must be a relief to have some of the length and weight off… Don’t tell her I said this, but having her body smaller makes her feet look huge. (But still adorable!)

When I adopted her, the stat sheet from the city said she was 8 1/2 pounds, but after her big haircut at her first trip to my vet she weighed 7 1/2. She had even more fur then than she did last week, but that gives you a scale. She could have lost nearly a tenth of her body weight in hair.

In some ways her feet always look big, but since the legs are short they look small at the same time. She’s like a real life Chibi cat.

That Astrakhan coat will mat more than that of a cat with straight long fur. I love it–7 1/2 pounds of cat and 1 pound of fur. You should have volunteered her clippings for the BP spill.

The wooly look goes away with time – the picture in the header on the left is about 2 months from a similar cut last year. She really hasn’t matted much since I got her, which makes me wonder how she got the huge ones she had. She wasn’t unkempt, like she had been outside in the wild, but there were huge mats on her underside. Like fist size.
