Heart on a Sleeve

I don’t know if I have mentioned this before but when Gus stands or sits in a certain way his spots form a heart shape on his front legs.

I suppose this would be sweet, except it is a little black heart.

And here he has debbil eyes.

Calla has started hanging out under the camp desk when I am not using it.  She tends to scamper off if I turn the chair so that my legs get any closer.

This pose gives a hint for why her body fur is colored darker and lighter in different regions.  When she sits like this, the skin on the sides is farther out due to the back legs and the fur is more open and insulates less well.  Therefore the fur comes out darker.

The fur behind the neck is similar – it is more vertical instead of lying flat, and the skin is pushed away from the body some by the shoulder blades.  So it is a bit cooler and darker.

That is a beautiful shot of Gus. He is so regal.

  2. I dont care if his little heart is black, he’s still adorable! It’s just his Heart Noir!
Calla is so pretty. I find the fur color changes interesting. I always thought it was the cold/heat when they were kittens that set the colors for life. I see that I was wrong

The hairs themselves don’t change color, but when a hair grows out it can be different shades. Last year’s coat was quite a bit darker because of the cooler weather and because my furnace broke.

The year before was paler, but the pattern was different because her tummy was shaved and the hairs that grew from the shaved parts were a shade darker than the top where the hairs were.

This thing about Calla’s color is just fascinating. And my own black heart beats with Gus’s. As you know.

I love Gus, so it’s appropriate he has a ❤

He is a cat, so a black heart is appropriate.

Calla looks like a Tribble with ears there.

Black or not it is adorable.

  8. Gus is pawsomely handsome! No cat truly has a black heart…we sometimes have damaged hearts where trust of peeps is concerned, but betch’a Gus is a pretty cool guy.

Gus is a sweetie once he gets over his nervousness. When I’ve had visitors he has sat on their beds by the first morning, although it has been quite a while.

With me he likes to stay pretty close – right at the foot of my chair — for at least an hour or two a day.
