Davout takes a little bath.
Grant might have lost a bit of shadow striping on his sides, but still has tail rings. He likely won’t go full golden like the breeders want, but he still is a striking boy.
Davout always looks like his head is on a fluffy cloud.
Grant is a handsome boy! The dark brown/gray shading on his back is interesting: I’ve seen it in brown tabby cats, never on any yellow tabbies I’ve encountered. Is this uncommon?

Genetically, Grant IS a brown tabby – he’s black and not yellow/red. He just has an extra gene that pushes the tabby part out to the very tip of the hair, making the golden undercolor of the tabby the dominant color. For nicest results in show cat terms, he should have the residual tabby markings even more pushed out so that only the tip has a frosting of dark color and the cat looks yellow-gold. This is called “Shaded Golden”.
A male cat that is not genetically black like a ginger tabby or the dilute creme will never have black fur.

Thank you for the explanation. I’ll look more closely at the tabby cats I encounter. So many people dismiss them as “common domestic cats” or moggies, but I find their stripes and shading very beautiful.
