About

ThreeCatYard is about my cats and their yard.  I’m a poor gardener and hopefully a better cat owner, but we seem to be doing all right.

About Oldcat

I am a software engineer living in Southern California, and thus far too boring to discuss in any detail.

Gustavus  Adolphus (1997-2014)

Gustavus Adolphus is my oldest cat, being born in spring 1997. So as this is written he’s fourteen. He was rescued from the county shelter.  He’s slowing down a little these days but was never hugely athletic. He’s a cautious cat by nature and reacts by running off and hiding.  He likes going outside in the yard  for short stints but doesn’t explore much.

As the senior cat he gets some deference from the other cats but does not boss them around much. He does expect to get first nibble at any food plate and gets it, but he always leaves enough for the others after his taste.

His name comes from the warrior king of Sweden who saved Protestantism in Germany early in the Thirty Years War.  I thought his ruff and formal wear fit well with the ruff collars in fashion in the 1600s.

Update

Gus passed away on April 16, 2014, right around his seventeenth birthday.

Julius Caesar

Julius Caesar is my second cat, born in mid 2002.  That makes him nine years old at this moment.  He’s a long haired classic tabby, but his fir lies flat instead of puffing out like a Persian or Maine Coon.  He was adopted from a litter born to a co-worker’s cat.

Julius is an explorer and hunter by nature. Even as a tiny kitten he would fetch small paper wads and return them for what seemed like hours. Now that he’s big enough to go out, he disdains the paper and most toys for the real thing.  He regularly fetches small animals back home to me, usually alive.  I let the catches go, usually unscarred physically if not emotionally.

Julius is a friendly cat, despite the fierce picture above. Actually he’s yawning.

Calpurnia (? – 2013)

No cage can hold me
Calpurnia is my newest cat, and the first that I did not raise from kittenhood.  I got her from a city shelter in February 2010,  where she had been left by her previous owner.  She’s a doll faced Persian, also called Himalayan because she displays the colorpoint pattern like the Siamese.  She also has white spotting to add a dash of contrast to the points.

She’s probably about 7 years old now.  She fit in to her new life pretty well. as she is not pushy but no pushover. These days she has started to keep me informed of critical problems around the house – if the water fountains are making noise or if food bowls are out of kibble.  As fits her Persian nature, she doesn’t do it by loud demands but by leading me to the problem area if I happen to be going that way.

Update

Calpurnia passed away from a sudden illness on November 10, 2013.

Rhea Silvia and Marshal Davout

Rhea and Davout

After Calpurnia died, we all needed a lift.  I wanted cats that would remind me of Calla without being an exact copy and I came across a breeder of Napoleon cats.  These are a mix of Persians and Munchkin cats, with short legs.  But for genetic health, half of the kittens bred as Munchkin won’t have the gene for short legs.  They will have the other characteristics of the Napoleon – namely a good mixture of Doll Faced Persian looks with a bit of normal cat shape.  The bodies are not as stocky as a true Persian, and the hair not as bulky but elegantly long.

I saw Rhea, who seemed to combine elements of Calpurnia (Persian face and bicolor white), and another lady cat I had for 20 years named Cassiopeia (a dilute tortie), and a charm that was all her own.  She had been born on October 2, 2013 and could soon be adopted.

Her baby name was Rhea Silvia, after the mother of Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome.  I kept it.

Rhea and Ball (and Davout)

To keep her company in a crowd of grumpy old men and cats, I also adopted her half brother.  He was a bit older, having been born July 5, 2013.   He is a chocolate point cat, again, echoing some features of Calpurnia.  He thus has the blue eyes and dark ears, tail, feet and nose of a pointed cat like Calla, without the bi-color white markings that made her unique.

He’s named after one of Napoleon’s Marshals – high ranking generals – Marshal Nicholas Davout.

Kittens of Interest

The adoption and introduction of the two kittens went very well and it did not take long for the other two cats to accept and enjoy the company of the mostly well-behaved little pair. Gus especially enjoyed seeing them grow up in his last months.

And now we are three again.

About the Yard

My yard is what a friend called a ‘California Acre’.  In parts of it I can touch both the house and the back wall of the lot with the tips of my fingers.  The front is a little larger, since the adjacent pool area has been claimed by the cats if nobody is using it as an exploration area.

It’s not large, but it’s ours.

Perception is all – there are many smaller universes than your California Acre, or indeed, my Belfast yard. I am convinced most days that I live in a safari park. OK, a small one, but definitely a safari park. And pound for pound, it packs as much fascination as pretty much anywhere else I’ve been!

Thanks to Robyn, I just discovered you. I only have two cats and perhaps a California half acre if that 🙂 They are indoor only though. I’m in San Diego and the coyotes LOVE those outdoor kitties so I was too scared to even let them get a taste. Sometimes I let one of them roam outside with me, but she is way too brave for her own good so it’s a VERY rare treat indeed. The boy had the living daylights scared out of him the one time he did get out and now he wont even cross the threshold of an open door!

Most of my cats have been like that – liking to go out to smell the air but not wandering far, but Julie needs to roam farther and the alternative would be constant warfare. The entire street is walled, and the outside faces onto highway instead of an open space that could support a coyote for long.

I’d rather he stayed in and didn’t wander so much, but when he started racing to get out the garage when I was driving in, I gave up the fight.

      Welcome to the blog!

  9. Thank you for stopping by my blog, it gave me a chance to come here and meet your beautiful creatures! I also have a Himalayan, who I think you may have seen on my blog. He is a three year old, who after much agonising, was named Fudge, and is a constant delight. I also have a silver Chinchilla Persian (Coco), a red self Persian (Persia, how original, LOL), and two moggies – one red and cream tortoiseshell (Jem) who I found on the grounds of my school when I was a teacher, and the other a black and white tuxie (Rose) who bears some similarity to your handsome lad Gustavus. Like him, she was adopted from a shelter and is the senior of the crew, even if she doesn’t act it – she may be 11 in cat years, but at times she still behaves like a 5 year kid.

Your photography is stunning – unlike you I don’t really have a very dab hand with a camera – so I look forward to coming back to continue to gaze rapturously on your feline friends, and reading about their adventures 🙂

  10. Hello! Pleased to meet you and your furry friends 🙂 They are all beautiful in their own way and it’s nice that you adopted them all 🙂

I have a Blue-Point Ragdoll called “Max” or as his pedigree name “Maximus”. He too was adopted by me at around 6 months old as his owner couldn’t litter train him and Max was just plain unhappy there. She eventually gave him to me but sadly without his papers so I don’t even know his Birthday 😦 But he is lovely and my very best friend.

He is about 7 years old and is an indoor cat; Ragdolls are apparently indoor types due to their docile nature, but that suits me fine as I live in a Flat.

One day I will either make a “Post-A-Week” Max Blog and post his pictures and write what he’s been up to- sounds quite fun! or Just do a Post on him. I’ll see.

I could go on about Cats til the cow’s come home I love them so much.

A *BIG* hello and cuddle to your wonderful Cats and thanks for stopping by my Blog! btw if you click on the Reblog, there are 36 cute kitten pictures a fellow blogger had put up-some are real sweet!

Hi Old Cat, whenever I see pics of Gustavus I want to scoop him up and hug him. Say hello to all 3 cats from me, please. Our kitty, Shandy, has a big yard at the front and back to explore, but he hardly ever ventures out further than the folding chair on the front patio, in the early evenings. Cats sure know what they want, haha.

  14. We have three cats also…well, three and a half really! Three of them are rescue cats, all from the same rescue center. The fourth one is a stray that has been hanging around the neighborhood and our house for the past 3-4 years so we took him him. He comes and goes as he pleases, but we make sure he now stays in at night. I have nominated you for the Tell Me About Yourself Award and you can read all about it here: http://terriskitchenuk.wordpress.com/2012/07/12/another-award/

I randomly came across this when I was searching for cat blogs. Great intros! I love the yawning picture — I have tried many times but have never caught my cat yawning in action (he always does something cute when I am not close to a camera!). My cat will envy yours so much as I live in an apartment building and he is indoor only. Anyway, great blog!

I think it is probably more his position as the older cat than his fur color that leads to it, and it seems your black and white is in a similar position. That, and Persians tend to be non-pushy by nature so the others probably accept it as long as it isn’t too bad.
