Gus-apolooza

Earlier in the week I opened a new brand of kitchen cleanser spray to do the counters and other surfaces.  Apparently it has an interesting side effect on Gus – it is like mega catnip in a bottle.

It was so good that he didn’t even get to the kitchen – the smell got him on the stairs and he started rolling around there.

There was a lot of rolling and rubbing on things and pounces and such.

There was also a lot of curious looks from the other cats, who were completely unaffected by the smell.   They were very interested in why he was acting like a loon.

He even climbed through the rail to the top tree basket for the first time in a long time, which might be one reason why he found it so easy to get the courage to chase Calla there in yesterday’s post.  The edge of the basket was good for getting the itch out.

At the same time Julius was poking around the base of the tree trying to figure out what was making Gus act like this.  Poor guy doesn’t like things he doesn’t understand.

  1. Oh my goodness, is one of the ingredients nip? Think he’ll try to lick at the counters!

He looks so cute in the 2nd pic. I’ve only ever seen him looking a bit aloof before!

I love it when they wiggle.

What’s in this magical cleaning product? I wonder if there are any other cats who like it as much as Gus.

Anything that makes Gus bouncy, I’m in favor of.

I think its some generic-ish Earth-loving kitchen cleaner with bleach. I would guess it is the bleach that does it.

With the Feliway, this is the second odd reaction he has had. Certainly Julie and Calpurnia have no reaction at all to this stuff.

Aww, Gus looks happy! Lotus is really attracted to one of the cleaners we use… maybe seventh generation? or maybe it is the clorox green cleaner. He flops on the floor and rolls around just like he has catnip.

I’ve heard that some cats can react to strong chemical smells just like catnip.

While is not quite the same thing, we used to have a cat when I was a kid who hated and feared the smell of nail buffing creme and the nail buffer itself. She would blast the thing right out of your hand if you moved it too close.

I think that was an acquired reaction from watching my mother using it on her nails, though, rather than a chemical response.
