Losing Ground

Somebody had to go to the vet for a day, but it wasn’t Rhea.  She just took it over this evening for a sleeping place.

It was checkup time for Harrison and it wasn’t good news at all.  He’s lost a lot of weight since the last time.  While his interest in food is erratic, when he is hungry he eats as much as a much larger cat would eat in a day.  He’s not digesting it well.

His constant cold isn’t helping matters.  He got some special drops in his nose to see if that helps.  This is of additional interest because a possible treatment in the future is steroids, which knock down his immune system.  More tests are in his future.

On the plus side, he was very hungry tonight, eating three full (small) cans of food over the evening.  He’s pretty sleepy, but his snuffles and sneezes are a lot better.  It remains to be seen how well he digested this.

Perhaps a bit jealous of Rhea’s carrier, Davout was hanging out in this laundry basket on its side.

It wasn’t that long ago that she wouldn’t fill this carrier sitting sideways.

Anna had a little scrap with Rhea in the morning when I was getting her breakfast.  The gate was open and Anna turned and spat at Rhea towards the door. Rhea did a little charge and there was some rug-slapping and noise between the two of them.

Anna held her ground for a good time, then went to her perch by the window as the next stand to take slowly enough that Rhea didn’t follow.  I diverted Rhea then.  Anna seems to recover from these incidents a little faster.

Poor Mr. Harrison! Is there some different kind of food that would be better for him?

I haven’t seen any correlation between what he eats and his overall health. He’s had almost the same diet the whole time – grain free Wellness wet Turkey and Chicken flavors, plus what he can grab from the others.

That’s good high-quality stuff, so I guess it doesn’t relate.

I still want to fatten him up somehow.

So do I. But sometimes he just seems to forget he has food to eat. He’ll be sitting in the center of the room looking mournful and I’ll take him over to the plate and wiggle it and he eats some. Other times he bends down and then stops without taking a bite. That last might be congestion related.

I have terrible congestion myself in the mornings so I don’t eat till I’ve been vertical for a while and it’s drained. I guess his starvation time made him forget food. I wonder if a raised bowl would help? Less bending, more visible.

I did that for a bit when he first came here. That is worth a try.
